To buy binchotan wholesale from Indonesia you need to settle five things with the producer: the specification, the quantity and packing, the price term, the payment schedule, and how the cargo will be accepted by the shipping line. Charcoal is carried by sea as dangerous goods, so the last point deserves as much attention as the price. This checklist follows the order in which the questions usually come up.
1. Confirm the product
- Ask for a recent laboratory report from an independent lab and read the fixed carbon, ash, volatile matter and moisture. Our guide explains how to read a charcoal lab report.
- Agree the size grade in writing. Length, diameter and whether the sticks are round or split. Our grades are S (5–10 cm), M (10–20 cm) and L (20–27 cm), 2.5–5 cm in diameter.
- Request a sample and photos of packed cartons before the first order.
- Know what you are comparing. Whole-wood binchotan and sawdust-based ogatan are different products at different prices. See binchotan vs ogatan vs lump charcoal.
2. Quantity and packing
Export orders are normally planned by the container. Our minimum order is one 20 ft container, loaded with 12 tons as 800 cartons of 15 kg net, each with an inner plastic bag. Ask any supplier the same three questions: net weight per carton, cartons per container, and whether sizes can be combined in one container.
3. Price term
We quote FOB Surabaya. Our price covers the charcoal, packed in cartons with an inner plastic bag, delivered to the loading port. We help arrange export clearance, and its cost is billed together with the shipping costs; ocean freight, insurance and everything at the destination are the buyer's. Our article on binchotan price per kg gives the current figure. When you compare offers, make sure they are on the same term. A CIF price includes freight and insurance and will always look higher than an FOB price for the same goods.
4. Payment
Our terms are a 30–50 % deposit to start production, with the balance due when the shipping documents are ready. Whatever the supplier's terms are, tie each payment to something you can verify: a proforma invoice for the deposit, and copies of the bill of lading and other documents for the balance.
5. Shipping charcoal by sea
This is where charcoal differs from most food-service supplies.
- Classification. Charcoal falls under UN 1361, Class 4.2 (substances liable to spontaneous combustion) in the IMDG Code.
- Self-heating test. Carriers have long asked for a self-heating test report (UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Test N.4) from an independent laboratory.
- Tighter rules from 2026. IMDG Code Amendment 42-24, mandatory from 1 January 2026, changed how charcoal is declared and packed for sea transport. Shipping lines apply their own conditions on top of the code, and some restrict charcoal bookings.
Requirements differ by carrier and route. Before you confirm an order, have your freight forwarder check which documents and packing conditions the line will require, and share that list with the supplier.
6. Customs and documents
- HS code. Wood charcoal is classified under heading 4402. Bamboo charcoal and shell or nut charcoal have their own subheadings; other wood charcoal falls under 4402.90. Your customs broker will confirm the full code and duty rate for your country.
- Typical documents. Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, a safety data sheet and the laboratory reports. Some destinations ask for more.
- Destination rules. Some markets regulate wood products by origin. The EU Deforestation Regulation, for example, covers wood charcoal. Check what applies to you before the first shipment, because the information has to come from the producer.
